SF Cutters Aja Ki Pro

Is the Aja “KiPro” Ready for Us?

I recently attended an SF Cutters event that was demoing the new Adobe CS5 collection. One of the guest speakers there was a representative from the Aja company. They talked about their “Ki Pro” product which is essentially a field recorder that packs a mean punch. It allows any video camera that has an SDI, HD-SDI and HDMI output to plug into this recorder and automatically have it transcoded into any of the Apple Pro Res 422 variations. I have been some research and I haven’t found too many people who have experimenting with this technology in regards to using it with the DSLR’s. Speaking to one of Aja’s engineers he said that Canon 5D mkii was not compatible because of when recording the 5D feeds out a 480p signal. So my mind began to race and wonder if this would be a good match for the Canon 7D, taking out the middle man and having ProRes 422 videos ready to edit as soon as we are wrapping. However with new technology their are often quirks and bugs. So I don’t think were exactly there yet with being able to integrate our DSLR’s with the Aja KiPro, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see something in the very near future that will accommodate us. If anyone has heard differently or news to share on this topic feel free to comment, I would love to hear more!
